Period Garments

In my second year at WAAPA, I undertook a year-long project of creating a full 1860s outfit.

For this project I researched primary historical sources to reference in my designs, I then created the undergarments and outer dress, referencing primary sources to dictate all design features to ensure the garment was as historically accurate as possible with regard to the silhouette and construction features while straying from historical accuracy with the fabric choices. The design had to reflect a chosen character to demonstrate our ability to design costumes for characters.

Over the span of 12 months, I constructed the undergarments to create the structure for an 1860s silhouette this consisted of a crinoline petticoat and corset to mould both the body and support the dress to create the external shape. I then created the overdress which referenced 1860s evening wear as well as being inspired by Odette from the 2003 barbie swan lake movie (2003, Hurley)
